Product Of The Month:
The Bosu Balance Trainer

You've probably seen it in the gym.  You might have even jumped on it trying to figure out  what the heck to do with it.  But what exactly is The Bosu Trainer?  And what the benefits are of using it?

The Bosu (which is an acronym for Both Sides Up) was developed by trainer and international presenter, David Weck.  David wanted to find a way to make balance/unstability training easier and excessible to lots of folks, so he cut a conventional stability ball in half and added a 25-inch platform and -- voila!!  The Bosu was born.   As its name implies, The Bosu can be used with the flat side or round side on the floor, providing more or less challenge to many different exercises.

The Bosu is used by trainers to challenge their clients' stability and proprioception, to increase the activation of their core musculature, to force the body into integrated total body movements and to provide increased stabilization of major joints.

One of the best things about The Bosu is that when using it many basic exercises which normally involve a relatively small amount of muscle activation
(such as bicep curls) can instantly be transformed into full-body exercises using virtually every muscle in the body.

The Bosu can be used for exercises done with two feet on the floor (such as squats), single-leg exercises (such as lunges), push-up, abdominal exercises and lower back exercise.

Best of all the Bosu is relatively small, can be stored easily in a corner, under the bed or in a closet.   Using just dumbbells and your own body weight, you can have a multitude of fun and effective exercise at your disposal with just one simple, affordable peice of equipment.

Perform Better's Bosu package includes your choice of one of four Bosu Training videos.

In my opinion, everyone should have a stability ball.  They are a wonderful training tool that can help you tone your entire body.  These balls will challenge your core, sculpt arms and firm thighs.  Inexpensive, versatile and just plain fun to use!!!

Ya just gotta love bands!!  Bands allow you to travel with your own personal gym whereever you may be.  Throw one or two in your bag and tone the entire body.  Lightweight and compact -- now there are no more "I don't have space for that" excuses.

You don't have to feel sore and beat-up after your workouts!  Myofascial release with foam rollers is one of the latest tools in preventing soreness and improving muscle function.  Called, "poor man's massage" by world-famous strength and conditioning coach, Mike Boyle, these rollers provide you with a daily (or several times weekly) self-massage for just pennies per day!  For more on foam rollers please see my article on SMR.  There are cheaper ones but this one will hold up longer for just a bit more inital investment.

Okay, so I'm "ol skool", what can I say?!  But, I love the classic step, especially for inexpensive home gym use.  Where else can you get a cardio peice with virtually unlimited possibilities, a free weight bench and a tool for toning the butt and thighs that can't be beat -- all for under $100?  I've had mine for over 10 years (they are pretty much indestructable) and I still use it almost every day for one thing or another!

Unbeatable bang for the fitness buck!

It just kills me when I see folks lying on a hard surface or a cheap mat.  A great mat doesn't even cost a lot and makes floorwork of all types (stretching, core) much more comfortable.  These mats are thin, yet well-padded, they wipe clean easily and don't get smelly

Less expensive and not quite as lux as the JC Bands, but still very effective.  Buy a few and have a gym's worth of workouts that you can take anywhere for well under $100.
